What is Mental Performance?

Mental performance training turns psychological theory into practical skills that improve performer outcomes and well-being. Learn about the main five psychological skills below.

Relaxation

Relaxation techniques aim to reduce physical tension and calm the mind. Being able to shift from an explosive sprint to a composed free throw, or to mentally recover post-competition are just two uses of this important skill.

Imagery

Seeing is believing. Imagery uses mental rehearsal to turn vision into reality. Being able to picture yourself completing a double back handspring without a spot, or practicing a golf putt without moving a muscle, can help you perform those skills with confidence in real life.

Concentration

The ability to direct your attention at will and sustain focus for an extended period of time is one of the most important skills, no matter what sport. Maintaining focus during a long volleyball rally or staying mentally sharp while planning moves in a chess match are just two examples of this crucial skill.

Self-Talk

Self-talk gives you the instruction to succeed and the motivation to keep going. Whether its pushing through the final miles of a marathon or giving yourself reminders during a dive, self-talk is a versatile and essential skill to add to your repertoire.

Goal Setting

Short-term and long-term goals are the backbone to success. Small goals during a challenging fencing bout or milestones toward becoming an Olympian help you evaluate your progress and fuel your drive to succeed.
